Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business is searching for a Director of Development. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to work in a collaborative environment and produce significant results.  You will contribute to the department by providing essential support by being responsible for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects with a rated capacity of $100,000 and greater. Manages a portfolio of approximately 100-125 prospects. This person will be expected to travel 8-12 times per year outside of the Pittsburgh region. Serves as a manager of two professionals.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Manage and develop assigned portfolio of major gift prospects. Qualify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors capable of making major gifts to the business school via personal visits, direct mail, phone, or volunteer utilization when needed. Travel 8-12 times per year and have a personal goal of completing 100 visits during the fiscal year. Promote alumni relations activities and development events to assigned prospects.

  • Support Annual Giving and other development efforts and projects. Report progress on goals including number of visits, solicitations, commitments, upgrades and qualifications.

  • Manages a gift officer including making hiring decisions, training, performance management, coaching and mentoring and determining staffing needs, recommend salary increases and promotions. In addition, function as a team leader and coach, develop and motivate peers.

  • Keep current on programs and faculty, research and student initiatives at the business school.

  • Collaborate with faculty, deans and advancement colleagues when necessary.

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of strategic initiatives and campaign priorities as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

You must demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of the principles of fundraising; ability to see and understand the objectives of the Tepper School of Business, and to integrate goals with those objectives.

  • An interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting fundraising priorities through developing excellent working relationships with university constituencies; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills required.

  • Broad knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates; in addition to these general skills, the position requires the ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle.

Qualifications:

  • 8-10 years of successful fundraising experience, including direct solicitation of five to seven figure gifts from individuals. Preference for experience in higher education fundraising. Experience with complex program/staff management.

  • Master’s degree required or equivalent communication of education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of degree
